Drought Assistance Package
The chairman of the Lachlan CMA Mr Robert Gledhill today announced details of the new Lachlan CMA Drought Assistance Package.
"The Lachlan CMA has responded to the worst drought in history by releasing funding to Lachlan landholders & community groups to assist them in managing financially and socially in these dry times", said Mr Gledhill.
Under the Lachlan CMAs Drought Assistance Package landholders will be able to attend free 1 day "Stockplan" workshops run by the Dept of Primary Industries. These workshops will assist landholders in deciding the best drought management strategy for their stock. Options may include selling, agisting or establishing a drought-lot to protect their perennial pasture groundcover.
"If landholders are in a position to establish a drought-lot in order to remove stock from their pasture paddocks, then the Lachlan CMA will provide funding of $2 per DSE up to a maximum of $10,000 to assist with the establishment of drought-lots". Mr Gledhill added that by moving all stock into a temporary drought-lot, landholders will be able to preserve existing groundcover and prevent wind & water erosion during and after the drought breaks.

Lachlan CMA helping landholders manage native vegetation
Robert Gledhill, Chair of the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority (Lachlan CMA),
today welcomed the announcement by the State Government that the new
Native Vegetation Act 2003 regulations have been finalised.
The regulations will come into effect on December 1,
following the announcement by NSW Natural Resources
Minister Ian Macdonald in Orange today
"This marks the beginning of a new approach
to managing native vegetation in New South Wales," he said.
"The new approach has been developed in conjunction with landholders,
conservationists and scientists following extensive community consultation"
The new system balances the needs of landholders and the environment, is responsive to local conditions,
gives greater certainty than in the past and can be improved over time,
as new information becomes available. It also encourages revegetation
and rehabilitation of land with native vegetation.
Mr Gledhill said the Lachlan
CMA will play a major role in this new approach by
supporting landholders to develop Property Vegetation Plans.
"The Lachlan CMA will assist landholders to prepare property vegetation plans (PVPs)
that will help provide landholders with the resource security to run
their business sustainably over the long-term," he said.
"The PVP provides the basis for an agreed plan for managing native vegetation
"A new computer based decision support tool known as the PVP Developer
will be used by CMA staff to assess and develop the agreed PVP with the landholder.
" The government has allocated $436 million over 4 years which will go direct to farmers and other
local groups to repair damaged rivers and restore over cleared landscapes. Landholders who develop a
PVP for their property may be eligible for incentive funds from the CMA to help restore or protect native vegetation.."
Mr Gledhill went on to clarify the role of the Lachlan CMA in the implementation of the Native Vegetation Act.
"One of our major roles is to work with landholders to develop property vegetation plans," Mr Gledhill said.
"Once a property vegetation plan is agreed, we will continue to liaise with landholders to ensure
that the property vegetation plan is working well on the ground and to clarify any approval conditions.
"We are also responsible for allocating
incentive funding to landholders to protect and rehabilitate
native vegetation on their properties.
"Lachlan CMA will also provide advice to landholders on how
to sustainably manage native vegetation on their property.
"The Lachlan CMA has prepared and is implementing an Investment Strategy. This identifies priorities for the
investment of government and private funding including the management of native vegetation management.
"This year we expect to allocate $4.3m for native vegetation management."
Landholders who have any questions about the Native Vegetation Act or
the PVP process should contact the Lachlan CMA on 6851 9500,
or visit www.nativevegetation.nsw.gov.au
